Tottenham make ambitious attempt to sign £20 million target ahead of Chelsea

Spurs have reportedly made a last ditch offer for Atletico Madrid's Filipe Luis, who looked set to complete a move to Stamford Bridge in the near future.

Tottenham Hotspur have launched an ambitious attempt to sign Atletico Madrid’s Felipe Luis and steal him from Chelsea’s clutches.

Luis has been expected to complete a move to Stamford Bridge for much of the summer transfer window so far and the transfer seemed to be moving into its final stages today.

However, Spurs have made a late attempt to hijack the deal, according to TalkSPORT, as Mauricio Pochettino sees Luis as the perfect solution to Spurs’s problems at left-back.

Tottenham had to use the likes of Jan Vertonghen, a natural centre-back, Danny Rose and Kyle Naughton at left-back in the last campaign and none of the trio looked capable of doing the job required for a side chasing Champions League football.

Vertonghen is an excellent centre-back, but he often looks uncomfortable at full-back and Rose and Naughton will need to develop significantly before being able to be considered as first-team regulars for Spurs again.

As such, Pochettino has reportedly prioritised signing a left-back and Luis tops his list of transfer targets.

It is easy to see why, too, as the Brazilian was superb in Diego Simeone’s side’s remarkable campaign, where they won La Liga and also managed to reach the Champions League final.

However, securing his main target still looks unlikely. Spurs do not have the power to offer Luis elite level European football and although they may be prepared to match the wages that Chelsea will offer that will have some impact on the 28-year-old’s decision.

Intriguingly, the deal that Spurs have proposed to Atleti for their energetic left-back reportedly involves a player going to the Vicente Calderón as well as significant amount of cash.

The player involved has not been disclosed although speculation has linked Atleti with Roberto Soldado previously.

That deal would make less sense now, considering Mario Mandzukic has been confirmed as Diego Costa’s replacement for Los Colchoneros, but the chance to sign a player who has already proven his quality in Spain may still be a temptation for the La Liga outfit if he is the person who has been offered.
