Netherlands player ratings v Argentina: Villa defender outstanding

Ron Vlaar's performance for Netherlands was world-class, but a missed penalty meant his country wouldn't reach their second World Cup final in four years.

Many before the tournament were hoping Argentina and Brazil will play each other in the World Cup final. Brazil lost their semi-final, but Argentina did their bit in qualifying for the 2014 World Cup final.

There were very few chances created throughout the 120 minutes, with the best chance falling to Arjen Robben moments before the final whistle, but his shot was blocked by Javier Mascherano brilliantly.

Argentina created little, but they scored all four of their penalties compared to Netherlands' two to qualify for their fourth World Cup final.

Here are the player ratings for Netherlands:

Jasper Cillessen - 7

Looked comfortable throughout the match, but could have saved two of the four scored by Argentina in the penalty shoot-out. His woeful penalty record continues.

Stefan De Vrij - 7

Great header in the second half when Lavezzi looked to have half a chance. Looked comfortable throughout and rarely troubled.

Ron Vlaar - 8

Made a number of important tackles from Lionel Messi when the striker looked to have found space, which was on rare occasions in the match. Was superb in achieving that, but missed a penalty that harshly cost him and his country a place in the final.

Bruno Martins Indi - 6

Looked nervous when running backwards towards goal, especially by runs from Higuain. Was subbed off at half time as a result.

Dirk Kuyt - 7

Was his normal energetic and hard-working self throughout the match for the Dutch. His work rate never dropped, also scored his penalty in the shoot-out.

Nigel De Jong - 7

Was good in closing down Messi and force the Argentina captain further away from the ENtherlands goal to collect the ball in spcae. Subbed off after an hour because of his groin injury earlier in the tournament.

Georginio Wijnaldum - 7

Often found space in the middle of the midfield for his country, looked composed when he was on the ball. Made a number of runs beyond the striker but wasn't lucky enough in the ball falling at his feet.

Daley Blind - 7

Left Martins Indi exposed when he was going forward in the first half on a number of occasions, moved into midfield for the final hour and performed well doing so.

Wesley Sneijder - 7

Defended well for his team, closing down Mascherano and forcing the Barcelona man deeper, created very little going forward though and missed his penalty.

Arjen Robben - 7

Struggled to find space in a compact Argentina defence, should have scored when he had the chance in the last minute of normal time, a miss he will probably regret that he didn't take his shot earlier.

Robin Van Persie - 7

Struggled to hold up the ball for his country, had very few chances in front of goal though as he was left isolated at times by his teammates.

Daryl Janmaat - 7

Come on for Martins Indi at half-time, struggled with his passing but was efficient in defence, especially in clearing an effort from Aguero in extra-time.

Jordy Clasie - 7

Come on for De Jong after 62 minutes, passed the ball well in midfielder as the 23-year-old was composed in finding space in the midfield.

Klaas Jan Huntelaar - 6

Come on for Robin Van Persie after 96 minutes, barely had a touch of the ball when he was on the pitch, especially one that was important.
