One of the areas of the Liverpool squad that Brendan Rodgers still needs to improve is left-back, with Sporting Lisbon star Marcos Rojo still occasionally mentioned in relation to that role at Anfield.
Rojo has been an ever present in the Argentina back four which has guided the side through to the World Cup final and come the start of next week, Rojo could be holding a World Cup winners medal.
He had a superb game against the Netherlands in the face of one of the most dangerous wingers around in Arjen Robben, making it extremely difficult for the Dutchman to have a physical influence over the game.
Rojo showcased everything that Rodgers will be looking for in a left-back this summer; pace, position, strength, aggression and a decent dose of common sense.
At the moment, Liverpool do have options on the left hand side but they are limited.
Jose Enrique has been pictured back in first team training for pre-season, but it’s a gamble for Rodgers to start him at left-back come the middle of August because he missed so much of last season.
Jon Flanagan is also an option though he plays out of position when he’s asked to fill in down the left hand side by the boss.
Sides took that as an excuse to target him as a weakness in the Liverpool back four last season, but he excelled and will not complain if he’s asked to do a similar role heading into the new campaign.
There are plenty of sides to have reportedly considered moves for the £15 million rated Rojo but Spurs appear to be focusing on Swansea’s Ben Davies while some reports have claimed Chelsea have now done a deal with Atletico Madrid for Filipe Luis.
Here’s what Liverpool fans made of Rojo’s performance on Twitter last night.
Rojo is a don! Special performance— Adnan (@AdnanM95) July 9, 2014
Am very much impressed rojo's performance— Agyekum Sedrick (@AgyekumC) July 9, 2014
Davies and Bertrand? I'd rather have Moreno and if not Rojo will do. We have to show some ambition.— Hazem (@HazemLFC) July 9, 2014
Surely Rojo wouldn't cost us much more than the £10m we're willing to pay for Davies or the £16m for Moreno— Cormc Kelly (@cormackelly_93) July 9, 2014
Rojo is better than Moreno and Bertrand put together.— James (@JRowellLFC) July 9, 2014
I can't believe we STILL haven't made an offer for Marcos Rojo yet considering Moreno flopped #LFC— Niral Panchal (@npanch21) July 9, 2014
Rojo watch #LFC The fact Robben has moved from the right to the left tells you he has had Robben in his pocket! Sign him up BR— Brodinho (@Brodinho) July 9, 2014
