Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea has been speaking about the prospect of facing Real Madrid this summer.
United’s pre-season tour of the USA involves what is being termed the International Champions Cup, with the group phase seeing Louis van Gaal’s side go up against Real, Roma and Inter Milan.
De Gea has been speaking to United’s official website about the match against the Spanish giants, a game that is likely to have special memories as it was a match against the same opposition in the Bernabeu that was arguably the making of De Gea as a United ‘keeper.
“It’s a Spanish team and I will enjoy playing against them,” De Gea said. “It will be special for me. With it being a friendly, there is not as much pressure, but of course we will try to win the match.
“Big teams are involved in the tournament and we will need to play well.”
The pre-season tournament will be van Gaal’s first chance to cast his eye over what he has inherited, and will also give new signings Luke Shaw and Ander Herrera the chance to bed in prior to the new campaign.
More faces may yet join before United fly out to the USA, but whatever happens it is clear De Gea is enjoying the prospect of getting back to club duties.
“After a long break you want to see your teammates and start the new season,” the Spanish international added.
“You are looking forward to the training, which is tough but enjoyable.”
One thing is certain, United will have to hit the ground running as they look to put last season’s disappointment well and truly behind them. And who knows, there could be a number of new arrivals still to be included in the club’s summer plans.
