Former Manchester United transfer target Ilkay Gundogan is about to step up his recovery from injury ahead of Borussia Dortmund’s pre-season fixtures.
The German midfielder missed the majority of last season with a back problem, which also ruled him out of the German World Cup squad which has just reached the final of the competition in Brazil.
The £25 million rated star was pictured last weekend returning to Dortmund training and German tabloid Bild has now suggested he will undergo individual treatment sessions as he aims to get back into competitive action.
Should Gundogan’s recovery from the back problem progress with no complications, there is the prospect he could feature in the friendly against Liverpool at Anfield, just six days before the start of the new Premier League season.
It shouldn’t be a major surprise that BVB are taking extra care and attention in relation to his comeback because he could be one of Jurgen Klopp’s most important players heading into the new season.
He’s also a player that BVB showed a huge sign of faith in when they decided to offer him a contract extension into 2016.
That eased the pressure on Klopp to potentially have to sell the 23-year-old midfielder although the decision not to extend the deal for longer could be a sign the club are waiting to see how his back problem progresses this summer and into next season.
It’s a plus for football fans everywhere to see him back in yellow colours, but there’s still a long way to go.
