Speculated centre-back target Miranda this week declared his intention to stay at Atletico Madrid this week, while Mats Hummels also appears likely to remain with Borussia Dortmund.
That's two players valued at a combined £55 million who Manchester United will miss out on, but a perfect - and cheaper - candidate may be emerging.
Dutch defender Stefan de Vrij has been a regular fixture in the country's World Cup run, and put in another solid display against Argentina in last night's semi-final.
The Feyenoord centre-back is only 22, yet could be available for around £10 million, a third of the price it would cost to sign Mats Hummels.
Former Holland international Frank de Boer praised him earlier this week, stating: "He's made a big step. He takes risks in his actions at the back. I used to always do this also, I do like that. He always tries to tempt his opponent to attack him."
Rumours even began earlier this month that De Vrij had an agreemet to sign for United, but this was denied by his agent on Monday:
"We have no agreement with Manchester United, nor have we signed for them.”
It is clear however that his relationship with manager Louis van Gaal gives United an inside track to sign him, and with the Dutch eliminated from the tournament this may be an avenue the manager decides to exploit.
United fans were certainly impressed with his display against Argentina, here is how they reacted on Twitter:
