Several Liverpool stars will be eager to get stuck into pre-season for various reasons.
Brendan Rodgers was handed a big challenge when Luis Suarez was given a four month ban by FIFA but he’s continued to work extremely hard as Liverpool embark on pre-season.
The Reds came very close to winning the league last season and should Suarez leave, several players are going to have to step up and fill the void which will be created by the Uruguayan’s absence.
Rodgers has never been afraid to show faith to younger players and it’s an important pre-season schedule for several Liverpool stars both young and more experienced.
There’s still every chance that Liverpool will bring in a left-back this summer, which means Flanagan will have to compete against the more experienced Glen Johnson for the starting right-back role. Flanagan was superb last season as several sides tried to naively target him as a weakness.
Can naturally fills a holding role in front of the back four but he has to work hard in pre-season to ensure that he’ll get the chance to start there. It’s understandable why Rodgers may opt for a combination of Lucas and Jordan Henderson to play the holding role at the start of next season, bring Can into the side later on.
Ibe was perhaps expected to make a bigger impression on the first team last season than he did. He spent the majority of his time playing in the Championship and the under-21 Premier League. He will look to Raheem Sterling as inspiration that he can make a breakthrough next season.
The 21-year-old defender returns to the club having spent time on loan at Granada in Spain last season. He hasn’t had a chance to make an impression on the first team since his move from Sporting Lisbon and pre-season represents a chance for him to force his way into Rodgers’ first team plans.
Coady got plenty of first team football under his belt at Sheffield United last season. He’s unlikely to feature in the Premier League or Champions League over the start of the season but a good pre-season could see him find a very good Championship side to join on loan and continue his development.
