Five Chelsea players to watch in pre-season - Courtois, Piazon and more

There are several players who need a positive pre-season at Chelsea ahead of the new season.

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho will be grinning like a Cheshire Cat with the squad he’s assembled as the Blues’ pre-season campaign gets under way.

Some Chelsea stars are back in training ahead of the pre-season game against Wycombe next Wednesday and Mourinho will continue to look at players who can improve his team for next season.

The Blues are one of the favourites to win the Premier League, they’ll be in with a great shout of taking the Champions League and Mourinho will be determined to ensure it’s not two seasons straight without any silverware.

We’ve taken a look at five players it’s a very important pre-season for.

Cesc Fabregas

The Spaniard is going to be under immense pressure coming back into English football after a disappointing World Cup. He’s going to be placed in the middle of the team when the competitive actions gets under way and he needs to adjust very quickly.

Thibaut Courtois

Courtois has always maintained that he wants to be number one on his return to Chelsea. Mourinho will demand the very best from the Belgian throughout pre-season and Courtois will have to work hard for the right to be considered the main goalkeeper heading into next season.

Ryan Bertrand

All the while Chelsea don’t sign a left-back, Ryan Bertrand’s chances of starting on the left hand side of Chelsea’s back four improve. A good pre-season may convince Mourinho to hang onto him and will improve his chances of attracting a big club should the boss choose to bring in another player.

Lucas Piazon

The Brazilian midfielder did everything that Jose Mourinho could have hoped for while on loan at Vitesse Arnhem last season. Considering the number of central midfield options at the club, Piazon will have to play out of his skin in the pre-season friendly games to get noticed and to give himself a glimmer of hope next season.

Fernando Torres

Torres has seen his position in Chelsea’s attack threatened by the arrival of Diego Costa from Atletico Madrid. The striker has made it clear that he’s looking to stay and fight for his place and he’s going to have to work extremely hard over the next month if he doesn’t want to spend a lot of time next season on the bench.
