Ex Serie A star: Arsenal ace is 'perfect', we could sign him for €6-8m

Arteta Free Kick

Lorenzo Amoruso has called on Fiorentina to follow through on their interest in Mikel Arteta.

Former Fiorentina defender Lorenzo Amoruso has backed the club to sign Mikel Arteta, after their interest was reported in the Italian media.

The ex-Blackburn Rovers and Glasgow Rangers player told TMW that the Spaniard would be an ideal fit at last season's fourth placed Serie A side.

He said: "He is a very strong player despite his age. Especially from a technical point of view he is truly superior.

"I think he would fit perfectly within the group. Considering the age and the conclusion of his contract in 2015, I believe that Arsenal would let him leave for a figure between 6 and 8 million Euros."

Arteta's expiring contract is the cloud hanging over his future at the Emirates, and was last week linked with a move to Athletic Bilbao, a rumour the Spaniards have themselves dismissed.

His agent yesterday insisted he is content to stay at the Gunners, telling Italian radio station Radio Blu, reported by Goal: "I haven't heard from any clubs, what are the chances of him leaving? He's the (vice) captain of Arsenal, he is an Arsenal player and he's happy here."

Fiorentina's supposed initial interest in Arteta was first reported by The Mail in May, and repeated again this week in Italy, alleging the club have prioritised his signing.

Arteta's Arsenal future depends much on the club's activity this summer. The signing of a Sami Khedira or Morgan Schneiderlin would see him drop down the pecking order, while a fit Abou Diaby will also threaten his position.

It would be logical that should he quit the club it would be to return to play in his native Spain, where he has not played since 2004/05, but Fiorentina have plenty of ex-Premier League stars including fellow national Borja Valero who would help him settle in.
