When £25m Liverpool target Markovic was said to have 'signed' for Chelsea

In June last year, for a couple of hours at least, it was widely reported Lazar Markovic had signed for Chelsea ... he hadn't.

Liverpool are said to be lining up the acquisition of Serbian winger Lazar Markovic. The Benfica star has reportedly been the subject of a £25 million bid from the Anfield club - with several news sources suggesting the deal is in fact as good as done.

He is certainly a superb talent, but he has only been at Benfica for a season - so they are certainly making a quick buck on the player. The Portuguese side snapped him up from Partizan Belgrade last summer, beating Liverpool's Premier League rivals Chelsea to his signature.

But this is where his history is interesting - as he really could have been a Chelsea player already by now, in fact, he was reported as a Chelsea player before joining Benfica.

The two clubs were publicly at loggerheads over the transfer - but Chelsea planned on signing him, and immediately loaning him to Portugal for regular first-team football.

Rumours which Partizan president Dragan Duric spoke of in June last year - stating:

"Chelsea wants to loan Marković to Benfica for two years, and honestly speaking, I hope to God that they don't come to an agreement so that Lazar can stay six more months at Partizan."

Unfortunately this was mistranslated in the English media and for a few hours it was reported that Chelsea had actually signed Markovic and loaned him to Benfica for two seasons.

Chelsea fans went happy on Twitter - clearly pleased at their newest young recruit. Benfica fans were pleased they got their man, but unhappy he was on a short leash and then, Benfica released a statement saying they had signed Markovic on a five-year deal. No Chelsea, no loan deal - nothing.

Indeed Markovic had been falsely reported as a Chelsea player. But have no fear Liverpool fans. Chelsea certainly were keen on the young whizzkid and signing him is still definitely a middle finger to the club who stole Mohamed Salah from under Red noses in January.
