New Manchester City signing has Willy Caballero has spoken of the times he has had working under Manuel Pellegrini after signing a three-year deal at the Etihad Stadium.
Caballero and Pellegrini were at Malaga together, and during the 2012/13 season they came within seconds of the semi-finals of the Champions League when Borussia Dortmund scored two stoppage time goals to win 3-2 and progress.
He told the Manchester City website: “The most beautiful moments of my career were under Manuel Pellegrini in Malaga, where we achieved big things and we made Malaga’s name known around Europe."
The 32-year-old was linked with a move to the club last season when Joe Hart suffered a loss of form and was left out of the side for a short while.
Now Costel Pantilimon has departed the club for Sunderland, Pellegrini has decided to add to his goalkeepers to provide competition for Joe Hart as the Premier League champions look to defend their title and challenge for the Champions League in the season ahead.
Caballero believes he can provide good competition for Hart, saying: “I know I am coming to a big club with a very good goalkeeper. City already have a great goalkeeper in Joe Hart, but I will try and compete for the no.1 spot. I will do my best in the training sessions.”
It does seem that Pellegrini would like to have competition in all areas of the field, and having worked with Caballero in the past, it would seem a relatively safe option by going for a goalkeeper he knows.
Having rotated his goalkeepers for cup competitions last season, Caballero is almost certain to get a decent opportunity, as it is likely he will be ahead of Richard Wright in the City pecking order.
