The 2012 MLS Defender of the Year, Besler has been arguably the top centre-back in the league for the past few seasons with Sporting Kansas City, turning down offers from Queens Park Rangers and Southampton in December 2012 to re-sign with his hometown club.
One of the standout performers on Jurgen Klinsmann’s side during their impressive run to the last 16, the 27-year-old’s displays in Brazil have duly attracted interest from a host of European clubs, with agent Eddie Rock stating that his client is weighing up offers from both England and Germany, as well as the option to sign a more lucrative deal with Sporting KC.
The club’s hierarchy admitting they face a tough task keeping holding of their captain, in light of ‘enormous interest’, Besler recently stated that a move across the Atlantic remains a long-held dream of his and it appears he is moving closer to realising it, having met with team owners on Tuesday to discuss his future.
However, with all the reported interest, it’s possible that more teams are still to enter the race for the American international who has established himself as one of the first names on the team sheet since his 2013 debut under Klinsmann.
While Besler may not be the most physically imposing defender around, his excellent reading of the game means he is rarely caught out of position, while he undoubtedly stands out as one of top passers out of the back in MLS.
With fellow US defender Geoff Cameron currently enjoying success with Stoke City, there are clear reasons to believe the left-footed stopped would be a fine addition for a number of Premier League sides, but they will seemingly have to act fast if they wish to secure his services.
