Four reasons Liverpool fans should be excited about Lazar Markovic

Anfield

Liverpool fans, need anymore reason to be excited about the Reds' summer transfer activity? Here's what to expect from Lazar Markovic.

According to reports, Liverpool are close to completing the signing of Benfica’s Lazar Markovic, as Brendan Rodgers shapes his attacking line ahead of the imminent departure of Luis Suarez.

The 20-year-old winger, for whom the Reds are hoping to conclude a deal believed to be around £25million, played a starring role as Benfica completed a domestic treble in Portugal last season.

Here are four reasons for Liverpool fans to be excited about his impending arrival:

1. Markovic starred mainly on the right flank for Benfica last season, but his versatility makes him ideally suited to Brendan Rodgers’ fluid attacking system. He is adept on the left-wing or in a central role as a No. 10 behind the main striker. When playing on the flank he frequently drifts inside to join in more central areas to dictate play. Last term he scored five goals in 26 Portuguese top flight appearances.

2. He is known for his fantastic dribbling ability, which is enhanced by his acceleration and incredible pace. He excels when running at opposition defenders with the ball at his feet and he’s a nightmare to defend against in 1 v 1 situations. In the Europa League last season he completed 43% of his attempted dribbles, he also drew three fouls.

3. Last season the Serbian earned numerous plaudits for his tireless work ethic – an attribute that will be crucial at Anfield. Rodgers demands that his team press to retrieve possession and Markovic is well-suited to carry out this task. His Europa League campaign saw him average two defensive actions per match – a decent effort for a forward. Throughout his Champions League involvement he won 63% of his tackles.

4. He averaged an 80.5% pass completion during his involvement in both continental competitions last term and, of Liverpool’s current forwards, only Raheem Sterling registered a higher success rate. The youngster proves more comfortable in possession than club stars Daniel Sturridge and Luis Suarez.
