'We hope Lukas understands' - Arsenal star Podolski gets news he won't like from Cologne

Lukas Podolski 3 Germany

Arsenal cult hero Lukas Podolski has news from his former club he may not be a huge fan of.

Lukas Podolski is on international duty with Germany at the World Cup, but as always will be interested to hear of the goings on at his former club Cologne.

The Arsenal forward is a hero at the recently promoted side, travelling back last season to watch them clinch their return to the Bundesliga.

He will surely be one day keen to return, but they have revealed this weekend that they have broken a promise made to him.

When Podolski left Cologne in 2012, his club pledged that they would retire his number 10 jersey, for as long as he was playing.

Now just two years on, they have reneged on their promise, and have been in touch with the Arsenal star to let him know out of courtesy.

Manager Joerg Schmadtke told BILD: "We will assign the number 10 to Patrick Helmes. We know that we had Lukas Podolski promised at that time that we retain the number in his honour. We have decided to award the new number, because all Bundesliga clubs accrue with a number 10.

"Our president Werner Spinner has informed Poldi informed in a letter. We hope to have an understanding of Lukas."

Helmes, 30, is a former German international striker who has just completed a transfer to the club from Wolfsburg. He played for Cologne earlier in his career and will know Podolski well from his time with the German squad several years ago.

The news may well be disappointing for Podolski on a personal level, but he may also be having too great a time with Germany in Brazil to dwell on.

It may well be a sure sign that Cologne are not anticipating there is any chance of luring him away from the Gunners this summer despite their return to the top flight.

You would imagine if they did attempt to bring back the German in future years, they would ask Helmes to hand his shirt over to keep him happy.
