With Ashley Cole moving closer to a deal with Italy’s Roma, former Chelsea teammate Samuel Eto’o could also be joining the full-back at the Serie A club.
Having recently become a free agent after his contract with the Premier League side expired, Eto’o’s representatives are reportedly in Rome today to hash out a deal with the club, with manager Rudi Garcia a long-time admirer of the three-time Champions League-winning striker.
Formerly one of Europe’s most deadly finishers with both Barcelona and Inter Milan, the 33-year-old joined Chelsea last August after two seasons in Russia with Anzhi Makhachkala, signing a one-year contract for an undisclosed fee.
Coming off a fairly productive campaign at Stamford Bridge, with 12 goals in 34 games over the course of 2013-14, Eto’o, however, ultimately failed to convince Jose Mourinho that his services were worth holding onto, with the £32 million signing of Atletico Madrid’s Diego Costa making him expendable in the end.
The Cameroon frontman also just endured a dismal World Cup with his national team, missing the side’s final two group games with an injury, as a bonus scandal embroiled their campaign of three-straight defeats.
With Roma still lacking a reliable goalscorer, despite an excellent 2013-14 season which saw them finish as Serie A runners-up to Juventus, Eto'o would certainly fit the bill of what the club are looking for, provided he accepts a significant pay-cut to the £7m-a-year deal he was reportedly on in London.
