Rodwell completed a £12m move to Manchester City from Everton in August 2012 after the then 21-year-old's quality performances had impressed at Goodison Park, and resulted in the youngster breaking into the England set up.
Since then the 23-year-old has only ever been on the outskirts of the first team, making only 16 Premier League appearances for the club, and falling even further out of favour during the tenure of Manuel Pellegrini.
The Chilean has handed only a mere five Premier League appearances to the 6"2 England international, and doesn't seem to have Rodwell in mind for any of his future plans.
With Fernandinho, Yaya Toure and Javi Garcia already ahead of Rodwell in the pecking order, coupled with the recent arrival of Fernando from Porto, the 23-year-old is expected to be surplus to requirements at the Etihad and must move to get his career back on track.
Rodwell's inevitable high salary at Manchester City is likely to price him out of a permanent deal anywhere this summer, but a loan deal could definitely be on the cards and Wearside might just be the immediate destination for the midfielder.
