PSG are in the midst of what they hope will be a long dominance of French football, but at European level they have yet to cross the threshold to really challenge for the Champions League.
They may have reached the knockout stages in the past two seasons, but losses against Barcelona and latterly Chelsea saw exits when wins were achievable in both.
The Barcelona side was one which were hammered a round later by Bayern Munich, while against Chelsea they let a first leg lead slip this season, undone by a late Demba Ba goal at Stamford Bridge.
In response the French champions have spent big, signing David Luiz from Chelsea for €50 million.
It was a deal which has divided opinion, yet Luiz's character has shone through at the World Cup with Brazil, every bit as brightly as his stunning 40-yard missile of a free-kick against Colombia.
It has PSG's stars even more excited about his arrival, including a player signed for €40 million himself, Lucas Moura.
The playmaker, linked with Manchester United before leaving Sao Paulo, believed Luiz can help PSG take a step up.
He told FranceFootball: "This is a major new player joined us and a great friend too. I am very happy he came to Paris. He will necessarily help us."
Veteran PSG centre-back Zoumana Camara, 35, also believes Luiz can be a real asset: "He is among the best with Thiago Silva, Sergio Ramos and Pepe. He brings a lot of technique.
"He is comfortable with both feet with a fairly clean recovery. He is hard as a player, a fighter, a warrior. He pushes others to give more. He has that natural leadership."
Luiz still has plenty more to give, he will hope, for Brazil at the World Cup, relied upon even more because of Thiago Silva's upcoming suspension against Germany, where Dante is likely to fill in.
The Luiz-Silva partnership has looked effective at the tournament as it did at the Confederations Cup last summer. PSG are clearly hoping their chemistry will help Luiz settle immediately at the club.
With reduced time before the season begins, it will be essential, but it appears his teammates are already excited and ready to roll out the red carpet, in the hope he can be the one to help take them to the next level.
