Manchester United are reportedly willing to sell Wilfried Zaha for just £7million, less than two years after signing him from Crystal Palace.
But despite the winger’s failure to break into United’s first-team to date, selling him would be a mistake for new manager Louis van Gaal.
Prior to his move to Old Trafford Zaha was hailed as one of English football’s most promising young talents, and his performances for the Eagles backed up those claims. Even during his first pre-season at United he continued to show what all the fuss was about with some exciting performances.
And then the competitive campaign began, and Zaha was conspicuous by his absence.
He may not have lived up to the somewhat unrealistic belief of some that he would follow the path of another unpredictable young winger Cristiano Ronaldo, but that does not mean his time at United should be written off as irretrievable.
At just 21, Zaha still has plenty of time to prove he is worth the reported £15million Sir Alex Ferguson paid for him.
With a contract until 2018, and with an incoming manager famed for getting the best out of young talents, the future could still be very bright for the winger.
And when you consider the time some of United’s other players have been given to prove themselves – most notably Nani and Anderson – surely Zaha deserves at least one campaign under the tutelage of van Gaal.
He is still something of an unknown quantity to the 62-year-old, and for that reason alone he should be given the chance to repair the damage of his debut season.
