Netherlands player ratings v Costa Rica: Geordie makes huge impact

Tim Krul

Tim Krul may have been playing for one minute out of 120, but was vital in the Netherlands' victory over Costa Rica on penalties.

It may have taken a long time to entertain, but the quarter-final between Netherlands and Costa Rica provided as much entertainment as the rest of the World Cup to date.

Few chances in the 90 minutes, with the closest to a goal coming from a Wesley Sneijder free-kick in the first half that hit the post, meant extra-time was due for a match that many expected the Dutch to comfortably win.

However, Costa Rica continued to surprise in this tournament with a resilient performance where goalkeeper Keylor Navas was outstanding in keeping out a Dutch team that continued to dominate in the extra 30 minutes, with Sneijder again hitting the woodwork before Van Persie had a shot cleared off the line and onto the bar by Yeltsin Tejeda.

It went to penalties, and Krul was the hero as Netherlands scored all four of their penalties before knocking out Costa Rica as Krul saved from Ruiz and Umana to send the Dutch into the last four.

Here are the player ratings for the Netherlands

Jasper Cillessen - 7

The Dutch goalkeeper played well for the whole match, made a crucial save in extra time from Marcos Urena in the 117th minute to keep the score level. Will likely to start again in the semi-final against Argentina.

Stefan De Vrij - 7

Defended well in the centre-back position for the Netherlands, ensured Joel Campbell didn't see much space and opportunities to attack.

Ron Vlaar - 6

Aston Villa defender could have given a penalty away in the second half with a clumsy tackle, did well all round though.

Bruno Martins Indi - 6

Slow with his passing at the back and looked to step out of defence a lot with the ball at his feet, struggled overall.

Dirk Kuyt - 7

Scored his penalty brilliantly just inside the post, played the match with real energy and tenacity. Key player in this Dutch side.

Daley Blind - 6

Looked to dictate play with his passing but never really materialised, made little impact overall compared to previous matches in the tournament.

Georginio Wilnaldum - 6

Took over De Jong's role in the deep lying midfield with energy. Looked to pass forward but couldn't do it as well as the AC Milan player would have.

Wesley Sneijder - 8

Very unlucky not to score in normal time twice with two shots hitting the woodwork, but created a lot of chances for his country. Very good performance.

Memphis Depay - 7

Looked to provide pace down the left of the dutch attack, but very little space to exploit in the Costa Rica defence so was subbed off after 76 minutes.

Arjen Robben - 8

Was criticised for diving in his last outing against Mexico, but his continual running against the Costa Rica defence was superb. Great performance from the Bayern Munich winger.

Robin Van Persie - 7

Was very unlucky not to score when his goal bound shot was cleared off the line onto the woodwork, but scored his penalty and led his country with character.

Jeremy Lens - 6

Come on for Depay after 76 minutes, tried to make an impact but was barely involved at all.

Klaas Jan Huntelaar - 6

Come on for Bruno Martins Indi after 105 minutes to provide some attacking threat, few chances fell to him. May have taken the fifth penalty but he wasn't needed.

Tim Krul - 8

Come on for Cillessen after 119 minutes to save the penalties, went the wright way for all five Costa Rica penalties and saved two. the true World Cup hero.
