The Netherlands are through to the semi-finals of the FIFA World Cup after a sensational and shocking penalty win against Costa Rica. After a game from which Costa Rica goalkeeper Keylor Navas should have emerged as the hero it was in the end a man who played just seconds of game-time before penalty shoot-outs who stole the show - Newcastle United goalkeeper Tim Krul.
Louis van Gaal made the brave and drastic decision to bring on the stopper with just moments left of normal time - taking Ajax custodian and Dutch number one Jasper Cillessen off in the process.
Krul, although not known for his penalty saving antics, turned out to be an excellent decision - as he saved two Costa Rican penalties to send the Dutch into the final four.
The affect of Krul's arrival appeared to be mostly psychological for the Costa Ricans. First of all there was the mind games Krul played, trying to put off his opposing shooter. Then there was his frame. Compared to the skinny Cillessen Krul looked like a monster between the sticks. The masterstroke however was Van Gaal tricking the Costa Ricans into thinking Krul was some sort of penalty saving supremo. Compared to their five excellently dispatched spot-kicks against Greece in the previous game the Costa Rican penalties on this occasion were poor - apart from Christian Bolanos' belter.
It was a gamble from Van Gaal, who showed his ruthless decision making and strong-willed nature once again with the substitution.
After the game he admitted it was a pre-planned tactic to bring on Krul.
And it is that type of tactical thinking which has had Manchester United fans purring all tournament. The Dutch boss takes over from the sacked David Moyes when the World Cup is over. And his big gutsy move yesterday has received mass plaudits from United fans on Twitter - who cannot wait to see Van Gaal take the reins at Old Trafford.
What they have been saying if Krul had fluffed his lines?
