Costa Rica crashed out of the World Cup last night on penalties to the Netherlands, but by reaching the quarter-finals they exceeded all expectations and enjoyed a phenomenal tournament in Brazil.
The entire team put in excellent displays but one defender caught Rio Ferdinand's attention, and the BBC pundit said that he expects a big club to make a move for Giancarlo Gonzalez.
"I'll be shocked if no one buys him," Ferdinand said, speaking of Gonzalez's display against the Dutch on Saturday night.
He has been a key part of the Crew defence already this season but raised his profile with his World Cup performances as he played in every minute of Los Ticos incredible journey.
|Team||Pos||Apps||Clean Sheet||Total Tackle / apps||Total Clearance / apps||Aerial Won / apps||Interception / apps||Mins|
|Giancarlo Gonzalez||Costa Rica||DF||5||3||2.20||9.40||2.60||2.20||510|
Gonzalez helped his side keep three clean sheet's in their five games as they shutout Italy, England and the Netherlands.
He made more tackles, interceptions and clearances than the likes of Brazil's Thiago Silva and David Luiz in a resolute defensive showing that will undoubtedly attract attention from some of Europe's biggest clubs.
The transfer window has just opened across Europe and Gonzalez could be on the move sooner rather than later.
He has made a statement, having showcased his defensive abilities against some of Europe's best strikers in Wayne Rooney, Edinson Cavani, Mario Balotelli, Robin van Persie and Arjen Robben and a big move could be in store for the Costa Rican.
