Football followers react to Chelsea winger Eden Hazard’s performance for Belgium against Argentina in their 2014 World Cup quarter-final clash on Saturday.

Belgium were many football followers’ ‘dark horse’ at the 2014 World Cup finals in Brazil, thanks to a talented and strong squad.

Although the European side did progress to the quarter-finals of the tournament – that’s better than what Spain, England and Italy could achieve – they were not particularly impressive.

The Red Devils kicked off their World Cup campaign with a 2-1 victory over Algeria and followed that up with a narrow 1-0 win against Russia.

Another 1-0 victory, this time over South Korea, saw Belgium book their place in the last 16 of the competition as Group H winners.

All this time Chelsea winger Eden Hazard did not perform to the best of his abilities and was largely underwhelming in his displays.

Romelu Lukaku was similarly in disappointing form for Belgium, despite heading into the tournament on the back of an impressive 2013-14 season for Everton while on loan from Chelsea.

Many would have expected both Hazard and Lukaku to step up their game in the knockout rounds, but it did not exactly pan out that way.

The former Lille winger once again went missing against the USA in the last 16, but ex-Anderlecht youngster Lukaku came off the bench to star for the Belgians and help them to a 2-1 extra-time win.

On Saturday, against Argentina Lukaku started on the bench and replaced Divock Origi on the hour mark. However, the 21-year-old striker could not make a huge impact and neither did Hazard, whose disappointing World Cup campaign came to an end on 75 minutes when he was substituted.

Here is how fans from around the world reacted to the displays of Hazard and Lukaku, as well as their Chelsea teammate Thibaut Courtois, who looks set to return to Stamford Bridge after a three-year loan spell at Atletico Madrid.
