Bryan Ruiz missed his penalty as Costa Rica were knocked out of the World Cup after losing to the Netherlands via a penalty shootout.

It may have taken a long time to entertain, but the quarter-final between Netherlands and Costa Rica provided as much entertainment as the rest of the World Cup to date.

Few chances in the 90 minutes, with the closest to a goal coming from a Wesley Sneijder free-kick in the first half that hit the post, meant extra-time was due for a match that many expected the Dutch to comfortably win.

However, Costa Rica continued to surprise in this tournament with a resilient performance where goalkeeper Keylor Navas was outstanding in keeping out a Dutch team that continued to dominate in the extra 30 minutes, with Sneijder again hitting the woodwork before Van Persie had a shot cleared off the line and onto the bar by Yeltsin Tejeda.

It went to penalties, and Krul was the hero as Netherlands scored all four of their penalties before knocking out Costa Rica as Krul saved from Ruiz and Umana to send the Dutch into the last four.

Here are the player ratings for Costa Rica:

Keylor Navas - 8

The Levante goalkeeper was sensational again, saving every shot on target bar one effort that was cleared off the line. Many will feel he is the keeper of the tournament, and his performance in the quarter final only enhanced that.

Cristian Gamboa - 7

Was aggressive in the defence but was unfortunately subbed off late on after picking up a back injury in the second half, Costa Rica struggled after he went off.

Johnny Acosta - 7

Superb defending in keeping Van Persie quiet, especially as the match wore on with a block in the penalty area late on.

Michael Umana - 7

Strong and resiliant in the central of defence, making very few mistakes, much like the rest of his teammates.

Giancarlo Gonzalez - 8

Outstanding defending throughout the match, made so many blocks and last ditched tackles to stop Netherlands attacks. Was composed on the ball as well.

Junior Diaz - 7

Strong play on the left hand side of the Costa Rican defence, marked Robben throughout the match and was composed in stopping him.

Bryan Ruiz - 7

Was creative in the central of midfield whenever they had the ball, which was rare. Missed his penalty though as they lost the penalty shoot-out, real shame as he had a great tournament.

Celso Borges - 7

The central midfielder was very defensive at the beginning, but as Costa Rica grew in confidence he looked to step forward with the ball, very good performance.

Yeltsin Tejeda - 8

Made a brilliant clearance on the line when Robin Van Persie shot, was superb in protecting the back four. When he was substituted off after 97 minutes, suddenly Costa Rica looked vulnerable to conceding.

Christian Bolanos - 8

Superb energy on the left wing, providing real attacking threat when they were on the counter-attack. His set-piece delivery was particularly important.

Joel Campbell - 7

Held the ball up well whenever required, but couldn't use his pace to accelerate beyond the back three of the Netherlands defence. Substituted just after the hour and looked annoyed with that decision.

Marco Urena - 7

Come on for Joel Campbell after 66 minutes, had a great chance that was saved in extra-time. Led the line well though when he was on.

David Myrie - 6

Come on for Cristian Gamboa after 79 minutes after he was injured, solid performance in defence by the substitute.

Jose Miguel Cubero - 6

Come on for Yeltsin Tejeda after 97 minutes, looked to get forward more that that of the player he replaced, did that job well.
