Palace reportedly prepare approach for Algeria World Cup captain

Crystal Palace are reportedly keen on bringing Algeria captain Madjid Bougherra to Selhurst Park.

According to reports, Crystal Palace are in talks over a possible move for Algeria captain Madjid Bougherra.

The former Sheffield Wednesday, Charlton Athletic and Rangers central defender is a free agent after leaving Qatari club Lekhwiya.

However, the Eagles face competition from newly-promoted Leicester and Championship club Derby, with both clubs also vying for the 31-year-old's signature.

Bougherra has enjoyed a hugely successful summer at the World Cup in Brazil, leading his national side to the quarter-final stage of the tournament, in which they faced defeat to Germany after a enthralling encounter.

He impressed with his displays, as the Algerians emerged as the competition's surprise package. He was looking to put himself in the shop window in Brazil and he will travel home knowing that he has done just that.

Bougherra's tournament statistics tell the full story, and despite the fact he failed to keep a single clean sheet, he defended admirably throughout his time in South America.

His tackling ability will stand-out as his most impressive attribute, considering he won an impressive 50% of his challenges. He averaged a further seven defensive actions per match, while registering a pass completion rate of 86%.

Crystal Palace were extremely impressive in defence last season, conceding just goals 48 goals, and for Bougherra, breaking into the starting XI will be a challenge in itself.

Damien Delaney starred as the club's most trusted centre-back throughout the past campaign, while Tony Pulis opted to rotate Danny Gabbidon and Scott Dann. Bougherra could find himself occupying this second central-slot, should he make the switch to the London-outfit.

The Algerian skipper could prove to be one of the bargains of the summer, especially considering the fantastic level of experience he would provide.
