Arsenal supporters react to Joel Campbell’s display for Costa Rica against the Netherlands in their 2014 World Cup quarter-final clash on Saturday.

Costa Rica were the surprise package of the 2014 World Cup and almost earned a place in the semi-finals.

The Central Americans were drawn in Group D alongside Uruguay, Italy and England. They were expected to be the group’s whipping boys, but it turned out to be quite different.

Jorge Luis Pinto’s side kicked off their World Cup campaign with a 3-1 shock victory over Uruguay and followed it up with a narrow 1-0 win against Italy. With qualification to the last 16 already guaranteed, Costa Rica drew 0-0 with England.

La Sele confronted Euro 2004 winners Greece in the round of 16 and appeared to be on course for a place in the quarter-finals, as they were leading 1-0 deep into injury time.

Costa Rica conceded an equaliser and the game went into penalties, but in the shootout, they emerged triumphant, getting the better of their European opponents 5-3.

In the last eight, it was the Netherlands who failed to get the better of Costa Rica in 120 minutes at the Arena Fonte Nova in Salvador on Saturday, but eventually beat them 4-3 on penalties.

One of the best players for Costa Rica in Brazil was a certain Joel Campbell. The 22-year-old striker has been on the books of Premier League club Arsenal since 2011, but has yet to play a first-team game for the Gunners.

Last season, Campbell had an impressive campaign at Olympiacos and it showed at the World Cup, where he was a revelation of sorts.

However, on Saturday, Campbell had a rather quiet game and was substituted in the 66th minute.

Campbell is scheduled to return to Arsenal for pre-season, and here is what the Gunners fans had to say about the youngster’s performance in Brazil.
