French international Mathieu Valbuena is expected to leave Marseille this summer after spending eight years with the club.
The 29-year-old had previously been linked with moves to Arsenal and Liverpool, although recent reports suggested that West Ham United were also in for the star.
The Hammers have been busy so far this summer, bringing in in Ipswich fullback Aaron Cresswell while Charlton’s Diego Poyet is reportedly having a medical. Valbuena, however, would prove a real coup for boss Sam Allardyce.
Unfortunately for West Ham, a potential deal to bring in the French international to London now appears unlikely as reports claim Valbuena is closing in on a move to Spain.
According to L’Equipe and reported by Spanish newspaper Deporte Valenciano, the midfielder is close to joining La Liga outfit Valencia in a deal worth between €5million and €7million.
His agent Jean Pierre Bernes has close ties with fellow Valencia player Adil Rami and this could play a part in a potential move to Los Che as both parties are said to remain in contact.
Valbuena is described as an explosive wide midfielder who naturally creates space by using excellent close control and fine dribbling abilities.
Throughout last season, in 30 Ligue 1 starts he contributed to nine goals by means of goals and assists and did enough to win a place in France’s World Cup squad this summer.
