Liverpool have started their summer spending swiftly, securing Rickie Lambert, Adam Lallana and Emre Can. And while the Anfield faithful will know what to expect from the England duo, they will know far less about the former Bayer Leverkusen man.
But now his former manager – and one-time Liverpool great – Sami Hyypia, has been speaking about the player Rodgers signed for a reported £9.8million.
In an interview with Liverpool’s official website, Hyypia said, “Emre is one of those players that always gives 100 per cent on the pitch. He is a very dynamic player and he is quite mature physically as well.
“With the work ethic he has, I know Liverpool fans will love him.
“He’s also very skilful and he can play it very simple. I think he suits the Liverpool style of play and physically he can compete in the Premier League for sure.”
Liverpool are preparing for a campaign in which they will return to the Champions League, while they also hope to go one better than last time and claim their long-awaited first Premier League crown.
He may be just 20, but Can is also very experienced having initially made waves at Bayern Munich before moving to Leverkusen last summer.
Since then he has made 39 appearances for Hyypia’s former side, scoring four goals and setting up a further five despite playing predominantly as a defensive midfielder.
The fact that Can has also operated at times as a left-back may have also appealed to Brendan Rodgers, as the club seek to sign a long-term solution to arguably the most problematic position.
But it is in midfield where Can is expected to shine, and if Hyypia is to believed, Liverpool have just signed a soon-to-be fan favourite.
