Marouane Fellaini has been speaking about the next generation of Belgian talent, but while highlighting three young stars to watch, he failed to mention a current Manchester United colleague.
In quotes published by the Mirror, Fellaini highlighted Divock Origi, Michy Batshuayi and reported United target Youri Tielemans as players to continue Belgium’s impressive progress. But Adnan Januzaj failed to get a mention despite making it into Marc Wilmots’ World Cup squad at just 18.
Many expected Januzaj to star in Brazil, but it has been his young teammate Origi who has taken many of the plaudits, with a move to Liverpool reportedly on the cards off the back of his impressive showings.
Batshuayi was somewhat surprisingly omitted from the World Cup squad in favour of Origi, while defensive midfielder Tielemens’ time will come.
The 17-year-old has reportedly been tracked by a whole host of Premier League sides including United, as he continues to impress for Anderlecht, while Lille’s Origi could join Batshuayi in moving this summer following the latters’ switch to Marseille.
Januzaj’s time will come at international level, and despite his immediate impact at United it is no surprise he has failed to maintain that level for an entire campaign.
But it is still surprising that in highlighting Belgium’s next wave of talent Fellani chose players who are 17, 19 and 20 and yet failed to include 19-year-old Januzaj.
Unless of course the trio he did mention really are that good.
