Everton reaped the rewards of Gerard Deulofeu's loan spell on Merseyside last season, as the Barcelona winger starred with the club. Yet now, the youngster is back with the Catalan giants and the Toffees must now find a winger to replace him - and that man could be Aiden McGeady, after the Irishman arrived from Spartak Moscow in January. The former Celtic winger struggled with his fitness levels after moving from Russia, and the 28-year-old says he hopes a full preseason will get him in the team.

"The target for me is to be starting the first game of the season. A full pre-season will be beneficial," said McGeady. "When I arrived I was trying to get my pre-season in when everyone else was winding down. It wasn’t like I was training on my own, I was training with the team. So it will be beneficial for me to be at the same starting point as everyone else."

Some of the Everton squad have been in over in Brazil for the World Cup, and nobody has impressed more than goalkeeper Tim Howard. The American single handedly kept the United States in the game against Belgium this week, and former Toffees stopper Nigel Martyn says the former Manchester United goalkeeper could play until he is 40.

"How long Tim can keep playing is down to his form and if he stays clear of injury," said Martyn. "Also how he feels mentally is important as well. It is slightly easier for an English guy to stay in England and carry on playing. I don’t know whether Tim would want to finish his career back home and play a couple of seasons in the MLS. But as long as he wants to do it and stays clear of injury then Tim can easily to play until he is 39 or 40."

Another Everton player who has featured in the tournament is midfielder Ross Barkley, and whilst he and England were knocked out in the group stage, speculation over the 20-year-old's future persists. Manchester City are the latest team to be linked with Barkley, and are reportedly willing to send the former Toffees star Jack Rodwell back to Goodison Park in order to land him.
