Belgium player ratings v Argentina: Ex-Chelsea player shines despite exit

Ex-Chelsea midfielder Kevin De Bruyne shined despite a 1-0 defeat and exit against Argentina.

Thibaut Courtois 8 - Came under fire and saved all but one. The Gonzalo Higuain goal was simply too good for any goal keeper.

Toby Alderweireld 6 - Defended ok, but never did enough in coming forward.

Daniel Van Buyten 6 - As much as Argentina won the game, he never had much too worry about, dealt with most that came his way.

Vincent Kompany 6 - Mixed bag for the Manchester City defender, made some really good tackles and interceptions. On other occasions made some clangers, one led to Gonzalo Higuain’s goal.

Jan Vertonghen 7 - Phenomenal crossing today from this man, always threatened when he got forward.

Marouane Fellaini 4 - Lacked any impetus in midfield. It just genuinely looks like he can’t hack it at this level.

Axel Witsel 5 - Expected more of this man today, had been playing pretty well up until this point but didn’t turn up today.

Kevin Mirallas 5 - Handed the starting spot ahead of Dries Martens but was unable to show the kind of form that gave him that chance. Missed a good opportunity by sending his header wide.

Kevin De Bruyne 7 - Belgium’s best player. Looked threatening and sent a few stinging shots Sergio Romero’s way.

Eden Hazard 5 - Just couldn’t quite cut it at this World Cup, always marked out of the game and couldn’t create a single spark.

Divock Origi 5 - His quietest game of the World Cup so far, has always looked better coming off the bench in this World Cup. He’s still young, so perhaps should have been used as more of an impact player.
