Colombia player ratings v Brazil: Rodriguez superb again

James Rodriguez playing for Columbia

James Rodriguez continued his brilliant form for Colombia, but it wasn't enough as they lost 2-1 to Brazil and exited the World Cup.

The first half started at a frantic pace, with both teams looking to press high and attack with real pace. The hosts took the lead after 7 minutes through captain Thiago Silva bundling the ball into the bottom corner after a Neymar corner.

Then after a period of few chances but plenty of action, Brazil doubled their lead after 69 minutes through a David Luiz free kick that was of the highest quality. The new PSG signing hit his free kick from 35 yards out into the top corner, giving David Ospina no chance in the Colombia goal.

However they weren't giving up there, and talisman James Rodriguez, who was superb all night, scored Colombia's only goal. The Real Madrid target played substitute Carlos Bacca through on goal, only to be fouled by Julio Cesar and the referee to award a penalty. Rodriguez nonchalantly scored the penalty, but they couldn't find an equaliser and were knocked out of their most successful World Cup ever.

Here are the player ratings for Colombia:

David Ospina - 7

Made a few important saves for Colombia in the first half, especially from Hulk. Nothing he could do t stop either goals, especially the free kick from Luiz.

Juan Camilo Zuniga - 6

Provided great energy on the right full back position, but struggled to defend against Neymar at times and closing the Barcelona man down.

Cristian Zapata - 7

Consistent and efficient in the central defence role, kept Fred quiet all game, good performance. Good block in the first half when Neymar was well placed.

Mario Yepes - 7

The 38 year old had a great performance again for Colombia which is likely to be his last international appearance. Thought he equalised in the second half but for an offside flag. Superb tournament all round by Yepes.

Pablo Armero - 7

Similar to Zuniga but on the left hand side with his superb fitness levels. Closed Hulk down a lot and defended well against him throughout, keeping the Zenit player quiet.

Carlos Sanchez - 6

Was closed down a lot in the first half by Fernandinho and struggled to cope with that pressure, grew into the match though to help Colombia slowly grow into the match.

Fredy Guarin - 6

Didn't make as much of an impact as he would have liked. Was overrun by Oscar and didn't create anything going forward, which he is normally so good at. He'll feel disappointed with his input.

Juan Guillermo Cuadrado - 7

Great energy and physicality on the right wing. Continually dropped into the midfield to help out. Could have done better in the first half when on the ball in a 4 on 2 break in favour of Colombia, but couldn't find an end product when well placed.

James Rodriguez - 9

Superb again. Was targetted early on by Fernandinho and Paulinho with a number of fouls, but it didn't have an impact on his performance. Great run in the first half beating two players, in the second half scored the penalty that he created. Everything Colombia did well went through him. One of the players of the tournament so far.

Victor Ibarbo - 6

Was subbed off half-time, struggled to get the ball and run directly at Maicon, and when he did failed to provide a good cross/pass. Didn't utilise his pace enough as an attacking threat enough.

Teofilo Gutierrez - 7

Played well occupying Luiz and Silva, but couldn't find himself any clear chances in front of goal. Good tournament all round though, did well keeping Jackson Martinez out of the squad.

Adrian Ramos - 7

Come on for Ibarbo at half-time, did better than him in forcing Maicon to concentrate on defending rather than going forward. Little quality in the final third though.

Carlos Bacca - 7

Come on for Gutierrez after 70 minutes. The Sevilla striker won the penalty and looked dangerous in his powerful dribbles, will feel aggrieved that he didn't start the match.

Juan Quintero - 6

Come on for Cuadrado after 80 minutes. Little impact as Colombia were getting desperate in finding an equaliser.
