De Jong signs: Who's next on Newcastle's shopping list?

St James Park

Newcastle United completed the signing of Siem De Jong from Ajax yesterday, but who is next on the list as the Magpies looks to strengthen for next season.

After a disappointing campaign last term, Alan Pardew will be keen to ensure he has the right tools available to give Newcastle fans a better time this season.

The signing of De Jong is promising for the Tyneside club, but there is still much work to be done in the transfer market.

With more activity a certainty at St James' Park this summer, here are three possible candidates that we could see in a Newcastle shirt next season;

Micah Richards

The 26-year-old has become a forgotten man at Manchester City, but could still have a great deal to offer especially at a club like Newcastle United.

The Magpies have been linked with a move for the England international and with Mathieu Debuchy seemingly set for a move to Arsenal, Richards could be the ideal replacement.

Having once been regarded as one of England's brightest young talents, the defender has fallen out of the limelight somewhat. Richards has made only nine league appearances in two seasons at the Etihad and is in need of reigniting his career.

At the age of 26 Richards still has his best years ahead of him, and could be a bargain at £5m should Newcastle manage to attain him.

Pierre-Michel Lasogga

Newcastle have made no secret of the fact that they have been hot on the trail of Lasogga in recent weeks.

Pardew needs to broaden his striking options following Loic Remy's return to QPR and the release of Shola Ameobi. The 6"3 striker could definitely prove a shrewd acquisition for the Magpies but Hertha BSC's reluctance to sell the German may prevent any deal being done.

Lasogga spent last season on loan at at Hamburg and scored 13 goals in 20 games in the Bundesliga. It's thought that Lasogga's preferred destination would be to return to Hamburg and the 22-year-old is reportedly willing to run down the remaining year on his contract to do so.

With club and player at loggerheads, a reasonable offer from Newcastle could see them granted talks, and they may be able succeed in luring the Striker to the Premier League

Virgil van Dijk

The Magpies have been linked heavily with a move for the Dutch defender and Celtic haven't ruled out a possible deal, stating only that Newcastle would have to make a tempting offer.

The 6"4 centre-back could offer a strong, physical presence to the heart of Pardew's defence, and at the age of 22 could also have a long future at St James' Park.

Van Dijk moved to Celtic from FC Groningen last summer for a reported £2.6m, in his first season at Celtic Park the youngster made 36 appearances and scored 5 times.

Newcastle had been strongly linked with a move for Steven Caulker, but Van Dijk may prove to be a wise alternative should a deal fail to materialise. The Netherlands under-21 international is a promising young talent, but an £8m fee could yet price Newcastle out of the market for the defender.
