Robin Van Persie has created a difficult situation for Netherlands and Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal.
The United striker left a Netherlands World Cup training session with his left thigh heavily taped, which suggests he’s carrying some sort of problem as the Dutch stare at the business end of the tournament.
The majority of Van Gaal’s focus at the moment will be on getting the Netherlands into the last four of the tournament in Brazil but he’s human and Old Trafford will be in the back of his mind.
Van Persie is the Netherlands’ most important striker. He started the tournament with a bang with that superb performance against Spain and has three goals at the tournament so far.
Van Gaal will play him if he’s able to nurse the problem because he’s integral to the Dutch attack alongside Bayern Munich star Arjen Robben.
However, that could create complications with Manchester United’s pre-season schedule just around the corner.
It’s a lose-lose situation for van Gaal because play Van Persie now and any problem he’s carrying could get worse, but rest him with United in mind and he’ll be heavily criticised for doing so.
Van Persie himself needs to show responsibility not to put his boss in an awkward position guaranteeing he’ll be okay through playing or withdrawing himself if he’s not able to play to his full capacity.
Considering the Dutchman’s history of nursing injuries at various points, it’s a definite concern but LvG is an experienced professional and for now he’ll do what’s best for the Netherlands, thinking about his Manchester United problems and options after the tournament in Brazil.
