USA player ratings v Belgium: Everton keeper outstanding

Tim Howard USA

Tim Howard made 16 saves, the most of any goalkeeper in a World Cup match, but it wasn't enough for USA to beat Belgium and go to the quarter-finals.

Despite the match ending goalless after 90 minutes, the last second round match between Belgium and USA ended in exciting circumstances.

Romelu Lukaku made a strong run before assisting former Chelsea midfielder Kevin De Bruyne to score from close range. Then De Bruyne returned the favour just before half time in extra time, when Lukaku beat former Everton teammate Tim Howard to double Belgium's advantage.

However USA were superb all night and pulled one back with 14 minutes left through a volley from Julian Green, but it wasn't enough as the Americans were knocked out of the World Cup after a great tournament that was followed vividly by those back home.

Here are the player ratings for USA:

Tim Howard - 9

World class goalkeeping. Made save after save in frustrating Belgium who made chance after chance, was unlucky to concede two after his superb performance. So unlucky to be on the losing side.

DaMarcus Beasley - 7

Good energy on the left of the USA defence, made a great goalline clearance in the first half when Fellaini was waiting to score.

Omar Gonzalez - 7

Was confident and reassured in defence, constantly halting the many Belgium attacks. Looked knackered though by the time Lukaku was on, couldn't control him in extra-time.

Matt Besler - 8

Brilliant defensive performance. Made so many clearances and blocks from Belgium attacks, only shame was out muscled by Lukaku for DeBruyne's opener. Superb performance nonetheless.

Fabian Johnson - 6

Was substituted after just 32 minutes with what looked like a hamstring injury, had a good tournament leading up to that point.

Jermaine Jones - 7

Constantly appearing all over the pitch, great energy and tenacity from the German born midfielder, true commitment.

Geoff Cameron - 7

Stoke City player was in midfield for USA rather than defence for his club, and looked comfortable in there. Was made to do a lot of defensive work though.

Michael Bradley - 7

Creative going forward with ball at his feet, assisted the USA goal with a lovely chipped pass. Didn't have too many chances to go forward though.

Alejandro Bedoya - 7

Was energetic on the left wing and was looking to help defensively as well as threaten going forward. Did all of the above well for his nation.

Graham Zusi - 6

Was substituted after 72 minutes, but struggled in the midfield. Often over-run by the power of the Belgians and din't do a good enough job defensively.

Clint Dempsey (c) - 7

Led the line for the USA as well as always in this one. Was unable to get on the score sheet as he missed a great chance to equalise in extra-time, a chance you would expect him to take normally.

DeAndre Yedlin - 8

Come on for Fabian Johnson after 32 minutes, provided incredible energy on the right hand side throughout the match. Incredible fitness, lacked the final ball at times though.

Chris wondolowski - 7

Come on for Graham Zusi after 72 minutes, did a better job than him in the defensive areas of the pitch, where he was required to be for most of his short appearance.

Julian Green - 8

Come on for Alejandro Bedoya after 107 minutes, scored a wonderful goal within seconds of coming on. Provided attacking threat with his pace late on, couldn't help find an equaliser though.
