Will Manchester United and Arsenal live to regret not splashing out on Ryan Gauld when they had the chance?

Following Ryan Gauld’s shock move from Dundee United to Sporting Lisbon it has been revealed that the 18-year-old has a €60million release-clause in his six-year contract with the Portuguese club.

When you consider Sporting reportedly paid just £3.3million for the midfielder that is quite a leap. And yet his talent is clear for all to see, leaving reported former suitors Manchester United and Arsenal perhaps questioning just why they did not move quicker for the player.

Reports at the end of last year claimed United were willing to pay £6million for the teenager – a fee that appears unlikely given his move for considerably less just seven months later. While Arsenal were also allegedly monitoring a player whose name was mentioned in the same sentences as Real Madrid.

Gauld may only be 18, but the attacking midfielder already has 51 senior appearances under his belt, along with nine goals and 12 assists.

He has also made 12 appearances for Scotland at various levels from under-12 to under-21.

Now at Sporting, he could blossom just as another young British player at the club has in the form of Eric Dier.

The centre-back is now being linked with a return to England, but Gauld’s future is very much in Portugal. And if he continues to improve as many expect, the likes of United, Arsenal and possibly even Real may wonder why they did not simply stump up the cash when they had the chance. Especially when you consider it could now take £48million to bring him back to Britain.
