Newcastle United finally let their hair down and got involved in the transfer market yesterday - when they finalised a deal to bring Ajax captain Siem de Jong to the club. the 25-year-old arrived on what is described as an undisclosed fee - generally believed to be around the £6 million mark.
And the addition of the versatile midfielder on a six-year deal was warmly received by the manager Alan Pardew:
"Siem will give us intelligence in the final third and create goalscoring situations. It is a big signing for this club."
Of course Siem has plenty of friends in the Premier League already - thanks to the Ajax connection. Not only does he have Vurnon Anita at Newcastle already but scattered around the country are the likes of Luis Suarez, Christian Eriksen and Thomas Vermaelen - all players he will know from his Amsterdam days.
There is also Tottenham Hotspur defender Jan Vertonghen. The Belgian played with De Jong for several years at the Amsterdam ArenA and even took over as captain after Vertonghen jetted off to North London.
And he got a welcome to the Premier League message from Vertonghen via Twitter today...
They won't be so friendly when the teams meet, on October 25th at St James Park.
