Leeds United supporters have their say on Stephen Warnock being told he can leave the club for free despite having a year left on his current deal.
According to Sky Sports News, Leeds United have told former England defender Stephen Warnock that he is free to leave the club despite having a year to run on his contract.
The news that Leeds have decided to allow the 32-year-old to leave has caused a mixed reaction amongst fans, especially as he was one of the few that got on the plane to join in with Leeds’ pre-season training camp under the watchful eye of Dave Hockaday and Massimo Cellino.
Last season, the left-back was ever-present in the Leeds United defence despite only playing 27 games and was statistically one of the clubs strongest players. Nevertheless, the United defender could well be on his way out of the Elland Road exit for nothing despite Championship rivals likely to become interested in the experienced full-back.
Leeds fans, who are keen for the team to improve on last season, have had a mixed reaction over the news that Warnock has been made available for a free transfer, but acknowledge he is one of the clubs highest earners.
We have taken a selection of thoughts on the matter and tried to show a representative spread of how the Leeds United fan base are feeling:
It'd be great if we could find a club interested in Warnock but surely nobody will be interested, especially given his current wages. #lufc— LUFC Tommy Dski (@tdski_LUFC) July 1, 2014
I take it a LB is coming or Charlie Taylor will step up? Stephen Warnock is better than White all day long. #lufc— Sheridan-Dictates (@Brac4773) July 1, 2014
Stephen Warnock free to leave #LUFC...never seen a footballer (or person in general) fall over himself and/or nothing so many times!— Terry Taylor (@tjtaylor1980) July 1, 2014
Really really disappointed that we're letting Stephen Warnock go. #lufc— Simon Haddock (@Si_Haddock) July 1, 2014
Stephen Warnock is a strange one. I think he's a good defender but technically he is so bad. I've never seen a more one footed player. #lufc— James (@JamesLUFC) July 1, 2014
The former England defender, whilst not outstanding, definitely wasn’t one of the worst players in the White of Leeds last season, although the amount he earned certainly made him susceptible to criticism when he wasn’t up to scratch.
Nevertheless, it does seem likely that the former Bristol City defender Andre Blackman has been earkmarked as his replacement and will look to earn a contract whilst on trial in Italy for the next two-weeks.
If the 23-year-old does sign, he would need to step up quickly to ensure that Warnock’s departure from Leeds isn’t a negative, but a positive.
