Ex-Saint backs striker to shine at Southampton under Koeman

Simon Gillett has backed Billy Sharp to make an impact at Southampton next season if given the chance.

Former Southampton midfielder Simon Gillett has backed out-of-favour striker Billy Sharp to shine under the new management at St. Mary’s Stadium.

The 28-year-old, who was recently released by Nottingham Forest, is a former team-mate of Billy Sharp from his days at both Doncaster Rovers and Nottingham Forest respectively, and he has seen the former Sheffiled-born hitman in his best form.

Billy Sharp earned a £1.8million move to Southampton during their Championship promotion season and scored an impressive nine goals in 15 appearances subsequently aiding their promotion back to the Premier League.

Since then, however, the striker who was renowned as one of the most clinical in the second division has only managed two Premier League appearances for the Saints, which puts him very much out of the picture.

Loan spells at Nottingham Forest, Reading and Doncaster Rovers have done little to aid his cause and fight to get back into the Southampton side, but maybe under new management the 28-year-old can once again shine and play a part for the Saints next season despite many predicting he will leave.

I find it unlikely that in Southampton’s current situation the former Sheffield United striker will go on to play a big part for them in the Premier League next season; however, that’s not he couldn’t have a role in the Koeman’s new look Saints, possibly as an impact striker.

What Billy Sharp has proven over the years is that he has a knack of being in the right place at the right time, which for a team playing at the highest level is a much needed quality.

So, he may not have a career at Southampton as a regular first-team player but he could prove to be more than useful from the bench.
