Rio Ferdinand is officially no longer a Manchester United player. The 35-year-old defender’s contract with the Red Devils ran out at the end of last season, and it was not renewed.
The former England international centre-back joined the Premier League giants from Leeds United in the summer of 2002 and went on to establish himself as one of the best players in the world.
Under Sir Alex Ferguson, Ferdinand helped United win the league six times, the FA Cup and the Champions League once each, and the League Cup on two occasions.
For most of his 12 years at Old Trafford, the former West Ham United star was partnered in central defence by Nemanja Vidic, who has also left the club.
The former Serbia international had decided to part company with United during the season, having agreed to move to Italian club Inter Milan for the 2014-15 campaogn.
Another of the veterans who will no longer play for United is Ryan Giggs, who finished his playing career last season and will be the club’s assistant manager working under new boss Louis van Gaal.
For many it is the end of an area, and the club’s fans will miss the trio wearing the red of United, but Ferdinand has assured them that the players who are currently in the team will make sure that they continue to achieve success.
It is really heartening to see Ferdinand taking the time to reply to the United’s fan’s tweet and assuring him – and the rest of the club’s supporters – that the future is bright.
