Chelsea have finally officially announced that they have reached an agreement with Atletico Madrid to pay the buy-out clause in Diego Costa’s contract.
Speculation Chelsea would move for the Spanish international has existed as far back as when the two sides met in the semi-final of the Champions League last season.
Costa has been touted as the ideal player to come into the Blues’ attack and provide the sort of power and presence, which has been missing since the days that Didier Drogba first left the club.
Jose Mourinho was very public in his criticism of Chelsea’s attacking options last season and he deserves praise for getting this deal in place as the summer transfer window officially ticks open.
There were times last season when the creative and attacking players in the midfield were put under extreme pressure simply because there was a real lack of presence up front.
Chelsea are starting to look like a very good bet for the Premier League and Champions League titles next season.
Costa will come into an attack supported by Eden Hazard and Willian down either side, with Cesc Fabregas tucked into the number ten role behind his fellow countryman.
Costa is a good enough player to be able to work with and feed off of those players, while also giving Chelsea a strong option in terms of holding the ball up and bringing others into the attack when the Blues are under pressure.
The Blues have completed a long term pursuit of the player when they could have chosen to focus on other attacking options.
Costa will definitely be under pressure when he turns out for the club’s first Premier League games of the season, but he’s got the ability and potential to be a solid goalscorer and performer in English football.
Here’s what Chelsea fans made of the news on Twitter that an agreement had been reached.

I don't think Diego Costa is a top top striker and isn't worth £32m but he's still a very good signing for Chelsea #DiegoCostaToChelsea— United Boy (@United__Boy) July 1, 2014
