The one Group G player Chelsea should sign after the World Cup

The World Cup group stage is over, and many players have caught the eye with their impressive displays ahead of the transfer window.

Group G saw Germany predictably run away with the group, claiming top spot with two wins and a draw, but the United States coming in second place ahead of Ghana and Portugal was something of a surprise. Ghana were embroiled in a row over bonus money which saw Kevin-Prince Boateng and Sulley Muntari sent home, whilst Portugal struggled throughout as Cristiano Ronaldo couldn't carry them through.

There were some great performances in Group G, most notably from Germany forward Thomas Muller, who hit four goals in the group stage, as well as the previously ineffectual Premier League midfielder Jermaine Jones and former Fulham hero Clint Dempsey as the drove USA in to the last 16 – but Chelsea should be looking to sign one of Germany's key defenders.

With Philipp Lahm playing in midfield, manager Joachim Loew has had to tinker with his defence, and that has meant two natural centre backs playing at full back – Jerome Boateng on the right, and Benedikt Howedes on the left. There have been some shaky moments for the pair – particularly against Ghana – but they have been mostly impressive so far.

Howedes has had the most asked of him given that he's a right footed centre back playing at left back, and Chelsea should be watching with intent. The Schalke defender, 26, has been dependable in the Bundesliga ever since making his debut for the Gelsenkirchen side almost seven years ago, and he's racked up nearly 250 appearances in that time.

Yet with John Terry's career ultimately coming towards its end and David Luiz off to Paris Saint-Germain after the World Cup, Chelsea could be the perfect team to give Howedes a chance in the Premier League, with money to spend and a definite need in defence.

Howedes' versatility to play anywhere across the back four will have no doubt impressed plenty of onlooking managers, and hopefully one of those will have been Mourinho. International team mate Toni Kroos has also been linked with a move to Stamford Bridge, but with Cesc Fabregas and Tiago Mendes on their way to West London, Mourinho should be looking to snap up this impressive defender.
