Monza set to be axed by Ecclestone

F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone says Italian Grand Prix circuit Monza will be dropped after 2016.

Considered one of the most iconic venues on the calendar, the Milanese circuit has hosted Formula One every year since 1950 with the sole exception of 1980, when the race was switched to Imola

But Ecclestone says he is unlikely to extend the Monza circuit's deal beyond 2016.

"I don't think we'll do another contract, as the old one has been disastrous for us from a commercial point of view," he told Italy's Gazzetta dello Sport.

"So it's bye-bye [to Monza] after 2016."

The Italian race could be staged elsewhere, though the country does not possess a wealth of circuits that meet the high standards or finance to host F1.
