Dundee United midfielder Ryan Gauld is reportedly on the verge of a £2.2million move to Sporting Lisbon.
The player had previously been linked with Manchester United, with the Sunday People claiming the Premier League side had even lodged a £3million bid along with the promise of three lucrative friendlies between them and the Scottish club.
Back in December it was claimed United’s bid was half what Dundee United were seeking for a player who had been dubbed the ‘Mini Messi’. And yet now the Daily Record claims Gauld is on the verge of a shock move to Portugal.
The report claims Gauld was only informed of the news yesterday morning and that he will be in Lisbon today.
While the move has not yet been confirmed, the report claims Sporting have the advantage as they were prepared to pay more than £2million for the 18-year-old, putting into question the previous claims United had gone as high as £3million.
The teenager made a staggering 51 appearances for Dundee United last season, scoring nine goals and setting up another 12. And if the move goes through it seems he could follow Eric Dier in becoming another young British player developing in the Portuguese capital.
