Would Keylor Navas be an improvement on Wojciech Szczęsny for Arsenal?

Arsenal have been linked with a move for one of the stars of the World Cup, Costa Rica goalkeeper Keylor Navas.

Costa Rica have taken everyone by surprise in the World Cup this summer, and although players like Joel Campbell and Carlos Ruiz have been taking a lot of the plaudits, they should be thankful for goalkeeper Keylor Navas.

His performances have been superb for his country but regular La Liga watchers won't be surprised by this as he has been in great form for Levante, and won La Liga player of the month in March. His displays have now seen him linked with many clubs including Liverpool and Arsenal. The Daily Mail believes Atletico Madrid could also be interested in the 27-year-old with the future of Thibaut Courtois unclear.

Arsenal have been linked with adding a goalkeeper to their ranks for a number of years now with neither Lukasz Fabianski or Emiliano Viviano pushing Wojciech Szczęsny strongly enough for that number one spot. The Polish 'keeper hasn't been a bad custodian for The Gunners and at just 24-years-old he still has plenty of time to improve.

Let's take a look at some stats to compare Szczesny performances in the last season of the Premier League with Navas' displays in the World Cup.

Obviously Navas has only played four games in the World Cup so that must be taken into consideration but with only one goal conceded every two games he has a great record. You can also see that whilst his pass completion percentage is lower than Szczesny's (48% compared to 65%), he attempts to make more passes during the match.

Neither 'keeper commits to too many punches, attempting to hold onto the ball instead. The stats show that both have made around three saves per game so there isn't much to split them.

However what should be considered is that the Arsenal defence is stronger than Costa Rica's which certainly makes Szczesny's job easier.

Last season he made more saves than anyone else in La Liga and rivalled Courtois for the best goalkeeper in the league. Navas joined Levante initially on loan in 2011 after spending a season with Albacete. He made his name in his homeland with Saprissa.

After being an understudy for two season at Levante for Gustavo Munua he claimed the number one spot last season. However with only a year left on his contract and a release clause of just £6.5 million he could be set for the next move of his career. At that fee it is worth a gamble for Arsenal, although from what we have seen it wouldn't be a gamble, and it would certainly keep Szczesny on his toes.

Although all he will be focusing on right now will be Costa Rica's quarter-final clash against the Netherlands.
