Arsenal defender may sweeten deal for Newcastle World Cup star

Arsene Wenger could convince Newcastle United to part with star defender Mathieu Debuchy but only if they offer cash plus Carl Jenkinson on loan.

After another impressive display for France at the World Cup, many Magpies fans are resigned to losing right-back Mathieu Debuchy this summer.

The 28-year-old has already been linked with a move to Bayern Munich and after helping Les Bleus past Nigeria, it would appear that Arsenal have also stepped up their interest in the player, with Arsene Wenger keen to launch a fresh assault on the Premier League title.

But with Newcastle unlikely to part company with Debuchy unless a significant bid is tabled, Arsenal may have to think outside the box if they are to beat the Bavarians to the signing.

One potential option could see Carl Jenkinson move in the opposite direction as part of a cash plus player deal that would no doubt appeal to those behind the scenes at St James’ Park.

Arsene Wenger was previously rumoured to be weighing up a move that would see Jenkinson sent out on loan for the season, with a temporary move to Newcastle one potential option that could be incorporated into any bid for Debuchy.

And while Jenkinson, who is valued at £10 million, is against moving away from the Emirates permanently, a loan spell with the Toon could allow him to play more first team football and ultimately weigh up his future beyond next season.

Alan Pardew, meanwhile, has made no secret of his desire to recruit English players, stating as much in an interview last October.

“We need to look at British players because we’re starting to get filled up with perhaps too many foreigners,” he said.

Cashing in on Debuchy while benefitting from Carl Jenkinson for a season could be the perfect way to start.

But the Arsenal man isn’t the only option on the table, with Manchester City outcast Micah Richards also linked to a Magpies move in the last few days.
