Prior to his summer move to Wolfsburg, Luiz Gustavo was strongly linked with a potential switch to Arsenal. And when you consider the importance of the midfielder on the Brazil national team, it is no surprise Arsene Wenger was said to be interested.
Now, following just one season at his new German side, Gustavo is said to be interesting Real Madrid, with Spanish broadsheet El Confidencial claiming the La Liga side want to bring both him and Toni Kroos to the Bernabeu this summer.
Given his reported desire to move on, Arsenal may plan on reigniting their interest in the player with a £25million release-clause; then again, they could benefit if he were to sign for Madrid, with another reported Gunners’ target, Sami Khedira, seemingly closer to the exit if Gustavo were to arrive.
Both players occupy similar positions on the pitch, and with Khedira into the final year of his contract Real are reportedly prepared to sell him for a fee in the region of just £16million.
Were Gustavo to arrive, that departure would appear a whole lot more likely, meaning that one long-time Arsenal target could actually be the catalyst for them to sign another.
Other clubs are said to be looking at Khedira, most notably Chelsea and Manchester United. But Arsenal will need to spend big and spend well this summer and reuniting Khedira with his former Real teammate Mesut Ozil would be a great start.
