Manchester United: Three potential deals to close on July 1

Arturo Vidal

With the transfer window officially open, will Manchester United continue making strong progress in the market?

Last week changed everything for Manchester United fans. Having seen the club toil in the transfer market up until then, they clinched a £60 million double deal for Ander Herrera and Luke Shaw.

It must not be forgotten either, than new manager Louis van Gaal is yet to start in a full-time capacity, otherwise engaged in a full-time role with Holland at the World Cup.

The big question now is who follows, and when. Already there are potential names on the horizon, which are viable to press ahead with on the first day of the transfer window being officially open.

William Carvalho

United representatives are reportedly in Portugal to negotiate the signing of William Carvalho from Sporting Lisbon, who is valued at £37 million by his club. The ball-winning central midfielder impressed during his limited World Cup showings for Portugal, and was scouted by United on several occasions last season. Arsenal, Chelsea, Monaco and Real Madrid have all been linked with his signature but it is the Red Devils who appear to have made the first step. Carvalho is also back from the World Cup and it is feasible for United to wrap up a deal with haste.

Miranda is a player who Manchester United are rumoured to be strongly interested in, even claimed to have presented the centre-back with an offer of €5.5 million a season. He has a £24 million release clause in his Atletico Madrid contract, leaving United knowing exactly where they stand when it comes to negotiations. Spanish newspaper AS reported a couple of weekends ago the defender is 'almost' a United player. Atletico are yet to see any of last season's stars officially depart, but with the transfer window opening, expect progress.

Arturo Vidal

The most spectacular deal United could hope to make progress on is Juventus midfielder Arturo Vidal. Reports in Italy have suggested the Serie A champions are bracing themselves for a big offer from the Red Devils, who will be buoyed by their recent signings of Herrera and Shaw. Vidal is a leader who can make a real difference to the side, and one who Louis van Gaal is a confessed admirer of. Vidal's World Cup involvement is now over after Chile lost to Brazil at the weekend, and talk regarding his future can now move forward into action. It was reported over the weekend in The Metro that the Red Devils are preparing to offer him a staggering £230,000 a week in wages.

In the pipeline? Thomas Vermaelen?

United are said to be closing in on Arsenal defender Thomas Vermaelen, but do not expect any progress on July 1. The centre-back is hoping to be involved for Belgium in their World Cup last 16 clash with USA which takes place at 9pm, and will put any talk over his future on the back-burner until his tournament is over.
