The fallout from Luis Suarez's biting incident with Italian defender Giorgio Chiellini at the World Cup continues, as fans and pundits react to FIFA's decision to ban the Uruguayan from football for four months. Chiellini has since said that the ban is excessive, and now former Ajax striker Suarez has finally admitted and apologised for the incident.
"After several days of being home with my family, I have had the opportunity to regain my calm and reflect about the reality of what occurred during the Italy-Uruguay match on 24 June 2014," said Suarez.
"Independent from the fallout and the contradicting declarations that have surfaced during these past days, all of which have been without the intention of interfering with the good performance of my national team, the truth is that my colleague Giorgio Chiellini suffered the physical result of a bite in the collision he suffered with me," continued the Liverpool star. "For this: I deeply regret what occurred. I apologise to Giorgio Chiellini and the entire football family. I vow to the public that there will never again be another incident like (it)."
Meanwhile, back on Merseyside, Reds boss Brendan Rodgers is attempting to step up his transfer business ahead of the new season. Southampton striker Rickie Lambert and Bayer Leverkusen Emre Can have already joined the club, whilst Southampton playmaker Adam Lallana is set to follow former team-mate Lambert to Anfield in a £25m move. With more business planned, Rodgers says he hopes to have his squad in place soon.
"We’ve targeted players, we’ve signed some and we’ll have more signings to come over the course of the pre-season. The idea is by the end of August we’ll have the squad together and it will be a really exciting time for us next season," said Rodgers.
"We’ve a lot of young players who will have gained experience last season and we will bring in more players with added quality so we will also improve as well and that’s something I’m really looking forward to seeing," he added.
Most Reds fans will be looking for defensive reinforcements after Lallana's arrival, but Rodgers has once again been linked with a swoop to sign Mexico goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa. The 28-year-old has been one of the stars of the World Cup with a number of stunning displays, and is a free agent having left French side Ajaccio at the end of the season. Liverpool goalkeeper Simon Mignolet endured an up-and-down campaign in his first season on Merseyside, and adding a free agent to compete with the Belgian could be a wise move.
