France player ratings v Nigeria: Former United youngster stars

Paul Pogba 2

Paul Pogba played a vital role as France beat Nigeria 2-0 in Brasilia to qualify for the quarter-finals of the World Cup.

Two second half goals from Paul Pogba and Antoine Griezmann were enough for France to beat Nigeria 2-0 and qualify for the quarter-finals for the World Cup for the first time since 2006, when they lost on penalties to Italy in the final.

Nigeria can be proud of their performance though, and matched their opponents for most of the match. Their final ball though wasn't to the same standard as France though, and thus couldn't score and were unable to qualify for their first ever World Cup quarter finals.

Here are the player ratings for France:

Hugo Lloris - 7

Wasn't tested a lot from the Nigeria strikers, however they did put plenty of crosses in and he coped with them well. Made a good save from Odemwingie in the second half.

Mathieu Debuchy - 7

Newcastle full-back looked to get forward whenever he could on the right wing, coped with the threat of Ahmed Musa well.

Raphael Varane - 7

The Real Madrid defender played well, especially using his pace to keep up with the fast Nigerian attackers.

Laurent Koscielny - 6

Arsenal defender didn't look as comfortable as the younger Varane in dealing with the pace of the Nigerian strikers, but did cope well and played an important role in keeping a clean sheet.

Patrice Evra - 6

Manchester United full back didn't get forward as often as Debuchy did on the right, but played as well defensively.

Yohan Cabaye - 7

Former Newcastle United midfielder dictated the play well by getting himself on the ball a lot, hit a great effort in the second half that hit the bar. Good performance again from Cabaye.

Paul Pogba - 8

Pogba was one of the main reasons why France beat Nigeria. His runs from deep were powerful and decisive, had a good effort in the first half saved before scoring the opening goal with a simple header.

Blaise Matuidi - 8

Like Pogba, Matuidi provided real energy in the France midfield. Working in tandum with Cabaye and Pogba, those three really do make a strong midfield for Les Bleus, and will take some stopping at this rate.

Mathieu Valbuena - 8

Linked up well with Pogba in the first half to create chances, his set-piece delivery in the second created a lot of chances for France, including their opening goal. Great performance.

Olivier Giroud - 7

Arsenal striker held up the ball well for his team and did everything asked of him, but struggled to find space and exploit it when France wre looking to play on the counter-attack, a style that doesn't suite his style of play.

Karim Benzema - 7

Benzema struggled when he was played on the left, making only 16 touches in the first half. When he played central, his impact was much better and France suddenly looked a much better team. Wouldn't be surprised if he starts there in the quarter-final.

Subs:

Antoine Griezmann - 8

Come on for Olivier Giroud after 62 minutes. His link up play with Benzema was superb, played an important role in France's second goal, a goal eventually credited to Joseph Yobo own goal. Should start in the quarter-final.

Moussa Sissoko - N/A

Come on for Mathieu Valbuena after 94 minutes.
