Former Chelsea and Wigan striker scores brace in 11-1 win

Werder Bremen Training

Franco Di Santo might have missed out on the Argentine World Cup squad but at least he had fun yesterday.

Franco Di Santo had a game to remember yesterday. Not known as a potent goal-scorer he bagged two goals, but he certainly had plenty of opportunity.

He was signed by Chelsea from Audax Italiano of Chile in 2008.

Despite being dubbed the ‘next Hernan Crespo’ it never happened in London for the youngster. But the 24-year-old found his place at Wigan - which has proven the stepping stone to a big Bundesliga move to Werder Bremen.

This summer Di Santo was a surprise inclusion in the preliminary Argentina squad, but he was not offered a permanent trip to Brazil so has returned to Germany for pre-season training with Werder Bremen.

So as Argentina prepare to take on Switzerland Di Santo was taking on VL Oldenburg of the Oberliga - a team who play in the sixth tier of German football.

But at least he and his pals had fun. Werder Bremen thrashed their opponents 11-1 to get their pre-season off to a flyer.
